As an educator at both the secondary and college levels, I can attest to a growing population of learners that our educational system seems to neglect. We want to help all learners succeed, but often the pressures of accountability and standardized testing leave us focusing much of our energy on those at risk of reaching the minimum standards. For everyone else, we tend to deceive ourselves into thinking that reaching an arbitrary “success” standard somehow fulfills our commitment to them. With every gold star and acknowledgement for reaching the designated expectation, we further dig these learners into the mindset of compliance, self-doubt and massive anxiety. This model created ideal employees in yesterday’s economies but will foster little to no success in that of tomorrow. In this session, learn how simple but consistent changes in our classroom culture can stop preparing our learners for our past, but instead for their future.
