In this educator's playground, teachers learn to measure photosynthesis using a Brix Refractometer, an inexpensive (under $20 on Amazon) handheld tool, easy for students to use. _x000D_
The chemical equation of photosynthesis is a foundation of life science yet many students fail to connect the abstract equation with the real changes plants undergo. _x000D_
Give your students hands-on experience to gain a visceral understanding of how photosynthesis varies across the plant, how weather and barometric pressure affects where the plant stores sugars, and how high sugar production provides natural frost resistance and insect protection to plants. Nitrogen-based fertilizer can make plants grow faster, but actually increase water content, reduce nutritional value and lower a plant's resistance to pests. Show your students how freshly harvested fruits and vegetables compare in nutritional value to store-bought._x000D_
You and your students will gain a richer understanding of not only photosynthesis but of how plants interact with their ecosystem, protecting themselves in preparation for storms, and feeding sugars to soil microbes through their roots to gain access to needed minerals.
